Pacquiao vs. Mayweather... Alternatives??
Let’s face it, right now it’s all “he said / she said” regarding a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather superfight. Among the many rumors have been a few suggestions for alternative bouts that I have been talking about for quite some time now. Wait, wait, wait. Don’t freak out. I want to see the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout first and foremost. But in the (likely) event that the deal doesn’t get made, I am all for some of the alternatives:
Sergio Martinez vs. Floyd Mayweather: This is a great match-up. Martinez has great speed— “the fastest middleweight” I’ve ever seen according to Jim Lampley. The size is also a big factor. Big challenge for Floyd, not to mention that a victory here could give him another belt in a different weight class (making it 6—tieing the old record).
Pacquiao vs. [Yuri Foreman/Miguel Cotto]: Anything where Pacquiao could potentially break the “most world titles in different divisions” record is a history-making/exciting bout. Remember, he tied the record of 6 world titles in 6 divisions with his KO of Ricky Hatton and broke the record with 7 titles in 7 divisions with his conquest of Miguel Cotto. If Pacquiao fights and beats one of these guys (dependent on who wins at Yankee Stadium), he would probably hold the 8 titles in 8 divisions record for a long, long time. UPDATE: Pacquiao apparently is fighting for an 8th title against Antonio Margarito. (This is the belt vacated by Sergio Martinez.)
Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Honestly, I think more common opponents between Manny and Floyd can only be a good thing. More ammunition for the opposing Pacquiao and Mayweather fans to argue about, more debates from boxing writers, more excitement. Pacquiao also needs to shut Juan up. Every time he doesn’t have a fight lined up, Marquez starts giving reporters sound-bytes about Manny being “scared” of him.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto: Same comment as above. I really think having more common opponents would be amazing for any potential build-up. Let me point out that this fight would only be valid to me if it were at junior middleweight and Cotto is a champion. I think that Cotto really did start to struggle at making 147, and it took something out of him.
