I'm finally starting to buy into all of these business of boxing theories.  Why?  See below.

What did Manny Pacquiao make in his last 5 fights?

Pacquiao vs. Marquez III - $35 million
Pacquiao vs. Mosley - $20 million
Pacquiao vs. Margarito - $35 million
Pacquiao vs. Clottey - $15 million
Pacquiao vs. Cotto - $35 million

Average = $28 million per fight

What did Floyd Mayweather, Jr. make in his last 5 fights?

Mayweather vs. Ortiz - $40 million
Mayweather vs. Mosley - $30 million
Mayweather vs. Marquez - $25 million
Mayweather vs. Hatton - $25 million
Mayweather vs. De La Hoya - $25 million

Average = $29 million per fight

*Note that these figures have been sourced from various internet reports and for the most part represent a LOW END estimate as these may not include upside sharing.  I make no guarantee as to the accuracy, but assuming that these are in the ballpark, they help illustrate my points below.

Now that we see the numbers, the sad reality creeps in.  It makes absolutely no business sense for these guys to fight.  What are the numbers being tossed around for each guy to make in the mega fight?  Something like $60 million each?  That's the equivalent of only two "easy" fights for each guy.  Why risk taking a loss?  Arguably, a loss would reduce either man's future earning power as his popularity among casual boxing fans decreases.  Not to mention that endorsement contracts and/or sponsorships are typically reserved only for WINNERS.  My sense after running the numbers is that there won't ever be enough money for this fight to happen.

There were reports of an interview with Mayweather many years back (think pre-De La Hoya) before Floyd was a big name in which he mentioned that no amount of money was worth his perfect record.  Supposedly, Floyd said that $30 million, $40 million, $50 million, $100 million was not worth his perfect record.

We've all heard from both Floyd and Manny that they don't "need each other."  Well from an earnings standpoint, they couldn't be more right.  They are both making huge paydays without taking overly large risks.

Is money important to these guys?  You bet.  Do these guys care about what the fans want to see?  Debatable.

Let's all hope that I'm dead wrong.
