Whether you’re planning on becoming a boxing aficionado or need more data points before placing that bet, you’re going to need to become well-read on the subject of boxing. Watching bouts is obviously the priority, but as I’ve mentioned elsewhere on this site, a lot happens outside the ring before a bout. Everything from training, to bout negotiations, and even personal issues that could affect performance are things you’re going to want to keep track of. The best way to do this? Follow the news! In the world of boxing, this is most efficiently done by following accredited magazines or online sites. To keep up to date, I highly recommend the following two magazines as a starting point.
The Ring (Ring Magazine)
Called the "Bible of Boxing", The Ring should be your primary source of information on what's going on. The Ring is very useful for boxing bettors because the magazine will often have expert analysis on upcoming high profile bouts. Many times, they will have different writers express their thoughts on the outcome of a particular bout. This is useful because the varying perspectives can allow you to look at the match-up from different angles. They may also go into very in-depth analysis of each fighter's strengths and weaknesses, which can be helpful if you have not already been following that particular fighter. The Ring is also useful for getting up to speed quickly on what has been going on in the rankings. Are new fighters steadily climbing to the No. 1 Contender spot? Who are the current champions? The Ring keeps track of all these movements and more, by summarizing the results of the past month's bouts.
It never hurts to get a second opinion. Like The Ring, Boxing Digest will usually have expert analysis on upcoming bouts. Again, if you want to be the best boxing bettor possible, you will need to be the most informed bettor. So get your hands on as much data as possible.
These magazines can also be useful for finding prospects. If you've read my other articles, you know that betting on prospects as they rise through the ranks early in their career is great way to earn some extra cash.
