On the undercard to the Lopez vs. Marquez fight, we have Glen Johnson vs. Allan Green.  I’m picking the favorite here folks.  This one is easy.  In Green’s last fight against Andre Ward, we learned unequivocally that Green can’t fight on the inside.  Ward exposed Green’s terrible inside game by winning all 12 rounds in an inside fighting clinic.  Johnson excels at fighting in the pocket, and while clearly not as skilled as Ward, his ability to fight for extended periods of time while in your face will be more than enough to beat Green.  Skills pay the bills, as they say.  Johnson’s pressure will ensure that this fight will be fought on the inside.  Once inside, the fight is Johnson’s.

I would encourage readers to watch Johnson’s last two fights.  Two fights ago, his non-stop pressure totally overwhelmed Yusaf Mack.  Quite frankly, Mack (who is obviously a younger, fresher fighter) cracked under Johnson’s pressure.  Johnson isn’t your average 41 year old, folks.  His last fight against Tavoris Cloud also demonstrated his inside fighting prowess.  While Johnson did lose the fight in a competitive decision (116-112 all around), this is due more to Cloud’s exceptional explosiveness than any defects in Johnson’s inside game.  In fact, Johnson’s pressure seemed to get the better of Cloud at times.  When I looked at Cloud’s face between rounds, he seemed bewildered, perhaps even strained.  Were it not for the encouraging words coming from the corner, I thought he might even start to wilt under the pressure from Johnson.

Last point: I don’t put a lot of weight (no pun intended) on Green’s comments after the fight with Ward.  That was not the first time I’ve heard excuses from him after a subpar performance.  The weight was not the real issue—his total lack of an inside game was.

I’m taking the old man Glen Johnson to win.
